Valentine's Day Gifts and home renovations . . .

This weekend was filled with bitter and sweet, triumph and tragedy, and, on the whole, a whole lot of LOVE!

After the week that Monty and I had together, I wasn't looking forward to anything more romantic this weekend than cleaning toilets and doing laundry. However, I had an invitation to a lady's "tea" on Friday afternoon, and I was trying to buy tickets to my college's annual "College Night" musical plays for Saturday night.

Friday afternoon, Liz injures herself by running with a pointed object in her mouth - so Friday's party was OUT. Saturday when I got home from Biology, Chris was in the midst of room changes for everyone but us and A, so we had plans at home.

Oldest daughter J needed her privacy, so she swapped rooms with the baby. Crib was dismantled (pretty tough after 8.5 years with an occupied crib), princess twin bed was pulled back out of the attic and assembled. Only son, N, was awarded the biggest room for his loneliness, so he'll get the big brass bed. Dismantled his twin bed, and put him on top bunk in the baby's new room until we get the brass bed a mattress cover. A and E are sharing the bottom bunk until one of them has the guts to attempt the climb and descent that accompanies ownership of the top bunk!

This was very cool, because I get N's old room for my office/art/library/treadmill room. Believe me - that's quite a lot for a 10'x12' room, but my hi-tekky glass computer desk makes that whole corner still seem very roomy.

The antique hoosier cabinet from my Big Mama's kitchen, which has served for the last 8.5 years as a changing table and dresser, has been repurposed, also. It now holds my paints in the area that sits behind the roll-top cover. I bought one of those little stair-step spice racks for my paint bottles - all colors visible at all times - and it fits perfectly with my pencil holder and brush holder beside it. The cabinets above the rolltop area will hold primer, small boards/media, and other smaller supplies for art. The vast cabinet underneath will hold large pads of painting paper, large stretched canvas, and any rolled material I need. I have three drawers on the right for whatever, plus, hubby showed me how to slide the tabletop area back and make a 5-inch shelf for more canvases behind the cabinet - between it and the wall. PERFECT!! I love the piece and it holds special memories of Big Mama. I'm glad it is SO practical, just like she was! (She's my Dad's Mom who died in 1986 at age 104.5 years.)

Along the opposite wall, I have four 72" bookshelves that are 2.5' wide each. These are all crammed with books, videos, cds, wooden jigsaw puzzles, and art supplies. The children each have a few books on their own shelves, but this is the CENTRAL library for the Montalbano home.

The closet (which will NOT shut and probably will have to have the doors removed) now hosts the treadmill (folded up) and the 13" VCR/TV for exercise videos and entertainment while one is huffing and puffing on the treadmill. I don't know if the closet positioning will work, but I will try it. If we end up liking that, the doors will come off the closet and some sort of curtain will be hung to hide the monstrosity that my body reveals is most of the time idle.

HEY! I could hang a bead curtain like a HIPPY!!! ANYWAY, this room is fabulous. It needs better light, but I think it will be just great.

Most women get chocolates or perfume or lingerie for Valentine's day. My husband who knows me, and loves me, and wants desparately to make me happy, gives me a room for work, art, writing, reading, running, and for privacy. How much more could a woman ask?

I love him!!
