Birthdays and best friends . . .

Whew! Another birthday has come and gone with some fanfare. Time to move beyond the grieving! ;oP

Just kidding, kinda.

39 I am. I am 39. Whoa. I gotta lose weight fast to justify that boob-job-for-the-40th birthday plan I have.(^)(^) that symbol represents perkies!

The office - jRag - had a cake and card party for me! They offered the traditional Southern "spankin" which sounded GREAT until they said it would be one swat for every year! That's when Sean told me to chose a "safe" word like CAKE, and if the swats got a little too rough I could yell "CAKE CAKE!!!" That lead to another conversation with Sean that had NOTHING to do with birthdays!

At home the children showered me with hugs and kisses and wishes that they could have bought me this or that expensive thing for my birthday. I don't think they know how much more each of their little thoughts they expressed was more of a present than anything that could be wrapped.

Vikki had called early in the day and sung Happy Birthday to me - my BEST friend. She even blogged about me!! I feel almost as famous as Shakespeare's "love" in his sonnet having been written about!! (see cornbreadchronicles.com link on Jan 28). It's completely unexplainable how precious it is to have a friend when you're 39 and busy who patiently (sometimes not patiently) makes time in her schedule while I scratch and claw out time in mine to get together on the phone, or at the bookstore, or for lunch and just relate!! Talk about the FEELINGS that accompany all the things that happen, the dreams that we still dream, the joys and sorrows of everyday stuff. It's not easy like when you're in school with someone or when you work with someone, or go to church with someone and you see them regularly. This takes effort, and she values me the way I value her!! Unbelievable! Thank you, God in heaven, for my friend Vikki!

Bry is another special friend that took time to connect in a special way! Thanks for the birthday poem, Bry! I LOVE it! Bry has no idea how much I value each email I get from him and how much I look forward to the next comment on my blog or anything from him!

My youngest brother had called me in the middle of the day from work and left a message in song:
"they say its your birthday - do do do do do do do.
Happy Birthday to you do do do do do."
You know that 70's rock birthday song!! I LOVED it! My brother has no idea how special it makes me feel for him to remember my birthday. You know how you think of your older siblings as SO important, and when my brother makes time for me it is just AWESOME!

My oldest brother called me and we talked for 5 minutes or so, too. He just SAID Happy Birthday - no singing. He wanted to know how the teaching job was going and we talked quite a bit. He's been a high school math teacher for 12 years now, and has quite a lot of wisdom I hope to glean. I'm glad he will talk to me about the good and the bad of teaching.

I called my parents, because they were trying to give me time to eat, put my babies to bed, and veg out for a while. They both got on the phone and sang happy birthday to me - they do that every year. I sobbed like an infant! I want to value each special thing they do for me as a couple and capture that memory into a special place in my brain that will be like a video I can watch over and over in the future when they aren't here to sing to me anymore. Do you think that will work? GOD, I hope so! I talked with them a bit, but I was so choked up I had to hang up. They were choked up, too. It was wonderful.

I see the years stacking up behind me, and like Indiana Jones said, "it ain't the years, honey, it's the mileage!" I'm beginning to see the mileage, too, but I still know there's a long and wonderful journey to continue. I really have no idea where the road leads, but the drive sure is exciting, the scenery is fantastic, and the companionship is beyond compare!

Thank you to all that read this journal. It is an encouragement and a blessing to have this avenue of expression! Thanks, Vikki, for introducing me to blogging!
