Biology 101 - a prerequisite for my master's - must have an A

Started my Bio 101 class at Jeff State Community College. I need to take 3 or 4 sciences and make straight "A"s to enter the Master's degree program at UAB.

It was GREAT! Mr. Rogers, the teacher, is very energetic and nice, and seems very interactive - a must for Ribqah! ;0)

Bad News:
I read chapter one in the textbook and I'm already pissed off. I remember why I had trouble with chemistry and biology in high school. (Trouble being constant - uh - DISCUSSIONS with my teacher about my beliefs I still made an A. Please read on.)

When we studied chemistry in high school, and I learned that the periodic table (the one listing over a hundred basic elements) was based on the Atomic THEORY, I just totally rebelled against learning it. If it's just a theory, why should I allot that brain space???? They could discover something that changes all that and then I've waisted my time and energy.

Well, Mr. Rogers spoke to the difference in theory and law. For example: the Law of Gravity is not in dispute. It is fact, because it has been proven. The Theory of Evolution or the Atomic Theory, are based on scientific evidence, but are yet unproven. He condescended to the "yahoos" that are always spouting off about their problems with the teaching of the theory of evolution. I spoke up and said that I only protest when the word theory isn't used and evolution is presumed to be fact, and it simply isn't taught as a theory at all. He totally supported my statement.

Then I go and read chapter 1 of the textbook, trying - as he suggested - to substitute the word "change" for the word "evolve," BUT it isn't possible in this text. One of the 8 or so criteria for determining something to be a living organism is that it evolved from something else!!!!!!! MAN, I'm going to have to put my sense of right and wrong TOTALLY on the shelf to make my A and get the f**k outta this class!!!

The good news is that we'll be studying cellular biology first and covering cellular nourishment, division, and respiration. I'm very excited about that because it will provide specific research for the backstory on my fictional book - "The Breathers."

So, I'm excited in good ways and bad about Biology 101.
Always passionate,
Ribqah
